Microblading Aftercare: The Complete Day-by-Day Healing Guide
Proper aftercare is the most important factor in getting the best result from your microblading. How you care for your brows in the first two weeks directly affects how your pigment retains and how even your final color looks. This guide walks you through exactly what to do — and what to avoid — day by day.
At New Level Beauty in Des Plaines, every client receives written aftercare instructions at their appointment and is supported through their healing journey by artist Khrystyna Znak.
Immediately After Your Appointment (First 2 Hours)
Your brows will look bold, defined, and significantly darker than the final result — sometimes up to 50% darker. This is expected. After your appointment:
- Gently blot the brow area every 30–60 minutes with a clean, dry cotton pad to absorb lymph fluid (a clear or yellowish fluid that naturally rises as part of healing)
- Do not touch the brows with your fingers
- Avoid sweating, heat, and steam for the rest of the day
- Do not apply any products to the brow area
Days 1–3: The Bold Phase
Your brows will continue to look darker and bolder than the final result. Some redness or mild swelling around the brow area is normal and typically resolves within 24 hours.
What to do:
- Cleanse brows once daily with a small amount of fragrance-free gentle cleanser on a damp cotton pad — pat (don’t rub)
- Apply a thin layer of the healing balm provided at your appointment (rice-grain amount — not a thick coating)
- Sleep on a clean pillowcase, on your back if possible
- Avoid makeup on the brow area
What to avoid: Swimming, saunas, heavy gym sessions, getting brows directly wet in the shower, sun exposure, touching or scratching the brows.
Days 4–7: The Peeling Phase
The brow area will begin to flake and peel as the outer layer of treated skin sheds. Do not pick, peel, or scratch the flakes. This is the most critical rule of microblading aftercare — picking removes pigment and creates gaps in the strokes that are difficult to correct.
The brows may look patchy or uneven as they peel. Some areas may look lighter than others. This is entirely normal and does not indicate a problem with your result.
- Continue once-daily gentle cleansing
- Apply healing balm (thin layer only) after cleansing
- Let flakes fall off naturally — resist every urge to pick
Days 7–14: The Ghosting Phase
After the surface layer peels, brows often look very light or even nearly invisible — this is called the “ghosting phase” and it alarms many first-time clients. Your brows haven’t disappeared; the pigment is sitting below the new layer of skin and needs time to surface.
During this phase: continue gentle cleansing, minimize any balm application (skin is mostly sealed), and resist the urge to fill in your brows with pencil (it’s unnecessary and can irritate the healing area).

Weeks 3–6: Color Returns
Over weeks 3–6, the true healed pigment gradually returns. By week 4–5, you’ll see the real result: typically 30–50% softer and more natural than the immediately-post-procedure look. The final result is crisp, defined hair strokes in a natural color.
At 6 weeks, you come back for your included touch-up appointment. This session fills any gaps, adjusts color depth where needed, and perfects the result. Most clients’ brows look their absolute best after the touch-up.
Long-Term Aftercare: What to Avoid Always
- Retinol and retinoids — accelerate pigment fading; avoid near brows permanently
- Glycolic acid, AHAs, BHAs — chemical exfoliants break down pigment; avoid on brow area
- Prolonged sun exposure on brows — UV rays fade microblading; use sunscreen on brows when outdoors
- Laser hair removal or IPL near brows — can significantly affect pigment color
- Eyebrow threading over tattooed area — mechanical exfoliation that can fade edges

Frequently Asked Questions — Microblading Aftercare
Can I wash my face after microblading?
Yes — wash your face carefully, avoiding the brow area. For the first 10 days, clean your brows only with a damp cotton pad using a small amount of gentle, fragrance-free cleanser. Pat dry immediately. Do not soak or hold water over the brows.
What happens if I get my microbladed brows wet?
Getting brows wet in the first 10 days can cause pigment to leach out of the incisions before the skin has sealed, resulting in uneven color, gaps, or faster fading. Light moisture is less critical after day 3, but sustained soaking (swimming, heavy rain, steamy showers directed at the face) should be avoided for the full 10–14 days.
Can I wear makeup after microblading?
No makeup directly on the brow area for at least 10 days. You can wear makeup on the rest of your face from day 2 onward — just be careful not to get it on the healing brows.
Is it normal for microblading to look patchy while healing?
Yes, completely normal. During the peeling phase (days 5–14), brows often look uneven, patchy, or much lighter than expected. This is the ‘ghosting phase’ and resolves as the skin heals. Most patchiness is corrected at the included 6-week touch-up appointment.
What products should I avoid after microblading?
Avoid retinol, glycolic acid, salicylic acid, and any exfoliating products near the brow area permanently — these can accelerate fading. During healing, also avoid petroleum jelly (Vaseline), anti-aging creams, and oil-based makeup removers on the brows.
