What Is Microblading? Everything You Need to Know
Microblading is a semi-permanent cosmetic tattooing technique that creates natural-looking eyebrows using ultra-fine, hair-stroke marks. Unlike traditional tattoos, microblading deposits pigment into the upper dermal layer of the skin using a handheld manual tool — creating crisp, realistic strokes that mimic individual brow hairs and last 12–18 months.
At New Level Beauty in Des Plaines, IL, certified artist Khrystyna Znak has performed hundreds of microblading procedures for clients across Chicago’s northwest suburbs — each one custom-designed to the client’s face shape, natural brow pattern, hair color, and lifestyle.
How Does Microblading Work?
Microblading uses a small, handheld tool fitted with a row of tiny needles to make shallow incisions in the skin while simultaneously depositing semi-permanent pigment. Each stroke is placed at the same angle and direction as your natural brow hairs, creating a remarkably realistic result.
A typical microblading appointment at New Level Beauty takes 2–2.5 hours and includes:
- Consultation and brow mapping — we measure your face, assess your natural brows, and draw the planned shape for your approval before anything is tattooed
- Numbing — topical numbing cream is applied for 20–30 minutes
- Pigment color selection — we mix or select the right shade for your hair color and skin undertone
- Microblading strokes — fine hair strokes are placed in 1–2 passes; numbing is reapplied between passes
- Review and refinement — you review the result and we make any adjustments
What Does Microblading Look Like?
Immediately after microblading, brows appear 30–50% darker and bolder than the final healed result. This is completely normal. As the skin heals over the next 4–6 weeks, the superficial pigment fades to reveal the intended color and definition.
The healed result looks like natural, full brows — not drawn-on, not blocky, not obviously tattooed. When done well, microblading is indistinguishable from real brow hair. Browse our before and after gallery to see real healed results from our Des Plaines studio.
The Microblading Healing Process
Healing from microblading takes about 4–6 weeks, with the most noticeable changes in the first two weeks:
- Days 1–3: Brows look bold and defined. Slight redness around the brow area is normal. Avoid water, sweating, and makeup on the brows.
- Days 4–7: The brows begin to flake and peel. Do not pick the flakes — this removes pigment and creates gaps in the strokes. Let them shed naturally.
- Days 7–14: Brows may look very light or patchy — this is the “ghosting phase” and is entirely normal. Pigment is still settling.
- Weeks 3–6: True healed color gradually returns. The result is typically 30–50% softer than the day-of look.
- 6-week touch-up: This included appointment fills any gaps, adjusts color depth, and perfects the final result.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Microblading?
Microblading is ideal for people who want to:
- Fill in sparse or thin eyebrows
- Correct asymmetry between brows
- Restore brows lost to alopecia, over-plucking, or medical treatments
- Reduce time spent on daily brow makeup
- Achieve a more defined, polished everyday appearance
Microblading works best on dry to normal skin types. Clients with very oily skin may find results fade faster or that strokes blur slightly over time — in those cases, we often recommend powder brows or ombré brows, which hold up better on oily skin.
Microblading is not recommended for people who are pregnant or nursing, on Accutane, on blood thinners, or who have active skin conditions (eczema, psoriasis) in the brow area. We conduct a full candidacy assessment at your free consultation.
Microblading vs. Other Permanent Makeup Techniques
Microblading is one of several permanent eyebrow techniques. Here’s how it compares:
| Technique | Look | Best For | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Microblading | Natural hair strokes | Dry/normal skin, sparse brows | 12–18 months |
| Powder Brows | Soft, powdery filled look | All skin types, especially oily | 2–3 years |
| Combo Brows | Hair strokes + shading | Dry or combination skin | 18–24 months |
| Nano Brows | Fine machine hair strokes | Oily skin, mature skin | 18–24 months |
